Before you select your dental plan, there are some things you should know about. We all know that we need to visit the dentist twice a year and dental insurance will certainly help with the cost of these checkups. Any other work beside a cleaning that you need can be covered in some way by insurance.
You will find that there are two type of dental plans. One is called the fee-for-service plan and the other is the managed care dental plan. If you already have a managed care plan then you know that the part of the cost that you pay for and the limit on the services that are covered and both limited. You are also limited on which dentist you can choose to see.
The fee-for-service plan is one that reimburses you and is bases on what you spent for the service you had done. With this plan, you are allowed to pick any dentist you want but you must pay upfront for whatever work is preformed. Your employer will then reimburse you a percentage of the amount you paid. There are also PPO and DHMO plans, one works with dental providers, similar to health insurance and the other where you pay nothing for certain procedures and sometimes requires a co-payment. All the plans have their own limits and restrictions so understand them all before making your decision.
